Zano Review 2026: The Privacy Coin Built by the Creator of CryptoNote

The Person Behind Zano: Why the Founder Matters
Most cryptocurrency projects are anonymous or built by teams with limited track records. Zano is different, and understanding why requires knowing who built it.
Between 2012 and 2014, Andrey Sabelnikov, alongside Nicolas van Saberhagen, developed CryptoNote, the first privacy-coin protocol. CryptoNote introduced ring signatures and stealth addresses, the two core mechanisms that make transactions untraceable and receivers unlinkable. Monero, MobileCoin, Safex Cash, and dozens of other privacy coins were built directly on CryptoNote foundations. Sabelnikov wrote the original reference implementation of the protocol code.
After his work on CryptoNote, Sabelnikov spent time at Bytecoin before leaving to build independently. He developed Boolberry under the handle crypto_zoidberg, then in December 2018 published a whitepaper for Zano, a next-generation CryptoNote coin built from scratch with a wider scope than simple private payments. In May 2019 the Zano mainnet launched. The co-developer is Valeriy Pisarkov, who handles much of the protocol engineering alongside Sabelnikov.
The significance of this lineage is not merely historical. The person who architected the privacy technology that powers Monero then spent years building what he considered the next evolution of that work. Zano is not a fork of Monero. It is a reimplementation of CryptoNote principles with additional layers: confidential assets, hybrid consensus, escrow contracts, and a compliance pathway that Monero deliberately chose not to build.
How Zano’s Privacy Works
Zano uses ring signatures and stealth addresses for privacy by default, the same foundational mechanisms as Monero. Every transaction is private unless the sender explicitly chooses otherwise, which is the right default for a privacy coin.
Ring signatures obscure the sender by mixing a transaction with a set of decoy outputs from the blockchain. Stealth addresses generate a one-time address for each transaction, derived from the receiver’s public key, meaning the receiver’s address never appears on the blockchain directly. Together, these two mechanisms mean that neither the sender nor the receiver of a Zano transaction is identifiable from the public chain.
Zano also uses Bulletproofs++, a proof system that hides transaction amounts while keeping the blockchain verifiable. This brings Zano’s privacy to the same three-layer standard as Monero: hidden sender, hidden receiver, hidden amount.
Looking further ahead: when Monero’s FCMP++ upgrade activates, expanding its anonymity set from 16 decoys to the entire blockchain history, Zano has committed to implementing the same upgrade. Sabelnikov confirmed in a January 2026 podcast that FCMP++ will come to Zano once it is production-ready for Monero. That means Zano inherits the anonymity set improvements without needing to do the underlying research itself, a meaningful advantage of building in the same technical lineage.
Hard Fork 6: The Upgrade That Changes Everything
The most significant development in Zano’s 2026 roadmap is Hard Fork 6, scheduled to activate at block 3,833,000, expected between August 25 and 27, 2026. This is the upgrade the community has been building toward for over a year, and it directly addresses the biggest practical limitation the project has faced: exchange and bridge integrations.
Privacy-first blockchain design creates an engineering challenge for third-party services. Exchanges need to track balances, monitor deposits, and reconcile transactions in real time. Zano’s privacy architecture, while excellent for users, made this technically demanding for integration teams. The result was that Zano stayed off most exchanges not because of regulatory concerns but because of engineering friction.
Gateway Addresses solve this. They are a new account-based address type built specifically for exchanges, bridges, and DEXes. A Gateway Address gives a service a single directly tracked balance with instant sync, removing the heavy engineering overhead that held integrations back. Crucially, Gateway Addresses change nothing for regular users. Standard Zano addresses work exactly as before. Privacy-by-default remains intact for everyone who is not an exchange or bridge operator.
HF6 also enables two-way asset movement, allowing native ZANO to bridge to Ethereum and TON networks and back. This opens the door to DeFi liquidity pools and decentralised exchange listings that were previously inaccessible. THORChain and Maya Protocol integrations, which would allow no-KYC cross-chain ZANO swaps at the protocol level, are contingent on HF6 activating successfully. The upgrade is already deployed in the wallet software. Users need to update before block 3,833,000 to stay in sync.
Real-World Use: Wallets, Payments, and Integrations
Zano has more real-world payment infrastructure than most privacy coins at its market cap level.
On the wallet side, Zano is supported in Unstoppable Wallet (added in v0.48), Cake Wallet (one-year integration anniversary in February 2026), and the Bitcoin.com Wallet. The team shipped the first public beta of the Zano Lite Wallet in May 2026, removing the sync overhead that previously made onboarding technically demanding for new users. On the payments side, the Zebec Mastercard, announced August 2025, allows users to spend ZANO anywhere Mastercard is accepted globally. ShopinBit, built on Exolix technology, supports ZANO purchases for flights, hotels, and retail goods. These are functioning payment rails, not whitepaper entries.
The project has also been building community presence in non-obvious places. The Zano team attended the 2026 Libertarian National Convention in Michigan, running hands-on onboarding workshops and presenting on privacy-by-default money. Zano Indonesia has been engaging human rights defenders and civil resistance communities, positioning ZANO as financial infrastructure for people who face surveillance and state pressure. The community is ideologically coherent in a way that most crypto communities are not.

How Zano Compares to Monero and Zcash
Zano sits in an interesting position relative to the two dominant privacy coins.
Against Monero, Zano shares the same foundational cryptographic lineage and the same privacy-by-default philosophy. Monero has a vastly larger user base, deeper liquidity, and a larger anonymity set. Zano has better exchange accessibility through Gateway Addresses, real payment integrations, and a compliance pathway that Monero deliberately does not offer. The two are complementary rather than directly competitive. Many users in the privacy coin space hold both.
Against Zcash, Zano’s advantage is default privacy. Zcash’s optional shielded transactions meant that Arkham Intelligence was able to trace more than 53% of all Zcash transactions in late 2025 by following transparent address activity, without breaking the cryptography. Zano’s transactions are private by default, eliminating that attack vector. At the same time, Gateway Addresses give Zano a similar compliance pathway to Zcash’s viewing keys, without requiring the base layer to be transparent.

Who Is Zano For?
Zano makes the most sense for users who want privacy-by-default with better practical usability than Monero currently offers, including payment integrations, a compliance-aware design, and a development roadmap that is executing consistently.
It is also a strong option for users who are interested in the Confidential Assets ecosystem, building or using privacy tokens on a chain that has been designed from the ground up for that purpose.
For users who simply want the deepest liquidity and largest anonymity set for private transactions, Monero remains the answer. Zano is the choice for users who want similar privacy fundamentals with a broader ecosystem and a more compliance-aware approach.
Our Verdict
Zano is the most underrated project in the privacy coin space relative to its technical pedigree. The founder wrote the code that powers Monero. The team has been executing a detailed roadmap consistently. The August 2026 HF6 upgrade has a specific block height, a deployed wallet update, and a clear technical goal. The payment integrations are live, not promised. The liquidity is meaningfully better than most comparable privacy coins.
The score reflects the project’s current state, not its potential. The anonymity set is smaller than Monero’s pre-FCMP++. Major exchange listings have not yet arrived. HF6 has not activated yet. These are real limitations today that the 2026 roadmap is designed to address.
If HF6 delivers what it promises and exchange integrations follow, Zano’s position in the privacy coin landscape will look significantly different by the end of 2026. For now, it is a technically serious project with a verifiable founder, a functioning ecosystem, and a concrete near-term catalyst.
